Hi there! I’m Lindsay Melka, a consultant, once identified as- an agency worker, a case manager, a social worker, an over-worked and underpaid clinician several times over and finally!!….a therapist in my own private practice.
I imagine if your perusing this bio, your interested in how to start and succeed in building your own private practice. If you’re anything like I was, you’re dreaming big about what it could be like to be your own boss. And let me tell you, it’s fantastic!
As mental health clinicians, we give a lot, so much, that it can not only wear us down, but make us question whether we should keep on trudging through. We love being therapists, but hate being managed by supervisors that may be overwhelmed themselves. We know we do better work when our case loads are manageable and we can make real connections with our clients. And of course, I’m sure you’ve dreamed of what it might be like to work WHATEVER hours you want!!
This is not a pipe dream. It is 100% attainable. I know, because, like you, I have been there. I had no idea that when I started working in private practice on the side, it would one day become my full-time job. I was not a risk-taker, an entrepreneur, a business owner. However, as this side gig grew, and my full-time job continued to make me cry on the regular, I got to my breaking point. I was ready.
I hired a Allison as a consultant. It was a financial commitment, but I was desperate, in a good way of course! I did everything she told me to do and more. And I did this all while working 2 jobs. The whole experience has been a whirlwind of personal growth. I know that if a once shy girl with insecurities can become a confident woman with a successful practice, you can too. Don’t get me wrong, it’s hard work, but it’s also fun and exciting. And it can happen sooner than you think.
In less than one year, my first year in ONLY private practice, I made over 100k. I did not take insurance, saw no more than 3 or 4 clients a day, and went on vacations. I didn’t listen to the Negative Nancy’s. I trusted in the process and simply followed the directions I was given. Which brings me back to the point of this “About Me”.
I am happiest when I am traveling. I love spending time with my beautiful pup and my life partner. I don’t like being told what to do when it doesn’t jive with my style and beliefs about counseling. I value freedom. I so value freedom. I love creating and being my authentic self in my work. I also like having money in the bank, paying off student loans debt (it’s been 10 years!!), treating myself to nice things here and there and taking time to fly home and see my family. THIS, is why, the work you put in can be worth it. If you’re willing to invest some time and money and the front end, it can happen for you too. Let me help you do what I truly believe you can. And hey, if I don’t, well, we can work on that too!
